Last weekend at the Laithwaites Vintage Festival 2013, along with many delicious wines, I tried the Reichsrat von Buhl Riesling Sekt 2011. Made using the same method as champagne, this sparkling German Riesling is delightful – creamy with mousse-like bubbles, floral aromas and tart citrus fruit flavours.
At £15.99 it is significantly cheaper than most champagnes and is certainly interesting to talk to your party guests about – ‘German sparkling, who’d have thought?!’
Sainsbury’s has recently made some exciting additions to its wine range, unveiling several new Winemakers’ Selection and Taste the Difference wines. My two favourites from the Sainsbury’s Spring/Summer press tasting were these Italian gems, both of which are coming to a store near you on the 12th May…
Taste the Difference Pecorino Terre di Chieti IGT 2012, £7.49
Made from 100% Pecorino grapes in the Abruzzo region of Italy, this fragrant, nutty white is excellent value and perfect if you’re keen to expand your wine tasting repertoire. Enjoy alongside gnocchi with spinach and gorgonzola cheese.
Taste the Difference Aglianico del Vulture DOC 2009, £9.99
This red from the Basilicata region of Italy is silky with flavours of cherry, mocha and sweet spice. Try it with venison or a flavoursome peppered steak.
