First roast of the season

For me the changing seasons are marked by my changing food cravings – in Spring, it’s all about fresh, crunchy veg, summer is abound with light salads and seafood, and by the time autumn and winter roll around, its comfort food all the way!

While this week has been noticeably mild for the time of year, I’m already gearing up for the festive season (I really do wish it could be Christmas everyday!) and on Sunday, to mark the occasion, we had roast beef with all the trimmings…

To accompany such a rich, warming dish, I dug out a red that’s been winking at me from the rack for a while, just waiting for a chilly day to strike – Château Montus Madiran 2006. This complex French red is a blend of Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes and is enticingly dark in colour with flavours of raspberry, redcurrants, liquorice and sweet spice. One glass and a belly full of mum’s roast later and we were all ready for a snooze!
